8th ASAGE Career Fair 2024

Strategic Insights on Artificial Intelligence

On September 26, 2024, the EPFL Rolex Learning Center hosted the 8th ASAGE Career Forum, an exceptional event that brought together more than 300 participants to explore the implications of artificial intelligence (AI) for organizations and the world of work.

This 8th edition of the Rencontres was organized jointly by the ASAGE Carrières volunteer group and the EPFL Alumni teams. The event provided an opportunity for an open and practical discussion on how companies in the region are adopting AI, as well as for sharing ideas and discussing the challenges and opportunities presented by this technology.

The program began in the afternoon with a workshop led by Rémi Sabonnadière of Effixis, who captivated the 85 attendees by outlining the various stages of AI adoption in businesses. Participants learned practical strategies for effectively integrating this technology into their organizations. At the same time, music lovers and tech enthusiasts were able to take a guided tour of the EPFL Pavilions exhibition, “Musica ex Machina — Machines Thinking Musically.”

The evening began with remarks by Leila Ojjeh, President of EPFL Alumni, followed by Stéphane Lury, President of ASAGE, and a brief introduction by the organizing team—Emmanuelle Yanguas (EPFL Alumni) and Isabelle Laugier (ASAGE Careers).

To introduce the conference theme, Silvia Quarteroni, Chief Transformation Officer & Head of Innovation at the Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC), presented the SDSC’s fascinating activities. She shared some concrete applications, as well as the limitations and challenges of AI. Among other things, Silvia concluded that the transformational capabilities of these tools are rooted in their application to business use cases specific to each organization and in their industrialization.

The roundtable discussion, moderated by Anouch Seydtaghia, head of the Cyber division at LE TEMPS, provided an opportunity to delve deeper into the impacts of AI on organizational processes and human skills. The speakers emphasized that, while AI can automate repetitive tasks, human skills remain essential for a successful transformation. Companies such as Nestlé, which has developed its own language model, and Logitech, which integrates AI into its products and internal processes, shared their success stories and innovative approaches.

The discussions continued well into the evening during a pleasant networking cocktail reception, giving participants the opportunity to build connections and discuss emerging trends in AI. Participants emphasized the importance of maintaining an open mindset toward AI.
We were fortunate to have the teams fromEffixis SA—which helps companies and organizations implement AI—and Resilio— which advises organizations on reducing the environmental impact of digital technology—join us. Oracle, a partner of the 8th Rencontres, distributed materials about its AI services.

Key Takeaways: “Business in the Age of Artificial Intelligence”

Here are some key takeaways from the event that executive committees and professionals seeking to effectively navigate this ever-changing landscape should keep in mind:

A Catalyst for Change

Artificial intelligence is now recognized not only as a cutting-edge technology, but as a true catalyst for transformation. During the event, speakers illustrated how AI has helped redefine business models, optimize operational processes, and improve the customer experience. It is becoming essential for executives to integrate AI into their business strategy.

Companies that successfully leverage AI not only improve their productivity but also develop new solutions that respond more quickly to changing consumer expectations.

Investing in Skills

One of the key takeaways from the event was the importance of investing in building teams’ skills. Rémi Sabonnadière, CEO of Effixis S.A., emphasized that to harness the potential of AI, companies must train their employees to use AI tools and develop a deep understanding of their applications.

This requires a long-term vision aligned with the company’s strategy, in which ongoing training becomes an essential pillar. With the advent of AI, training is becoming, more than ever, a strategic investment in the future.

The Strategic Role of Human Resources

Human resources are at the heart of this transformation. The roundtable discussion highlighted that fostering a culture of innovation is essential for effectively integrating AI into organizations. HR departments must work to promote soft skills—such as creativity, resilience, and critical thinking—which are increasingly necessary in a technology-driven and automated work environment.

Furthermore, it seems clear that employees will need to adapt their roles to ones enhanced by AI. This is a significant transition that must be supported by creating environments where experimentation and continuous learning are encouraged.

Promote interdisciplinary collaboration

Another key point discussed during the meetings was the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. The effective implementation of AI requires close cooperation between technical and operational departments. To successfully implement AI solutions, the first step is to work toward aligning strategic priorities within the board of directors and the executive committee.

To develop tailored AI solutions, it is crucial to define strategic priorities and identify business needs: leaders must foster a culture in which teams work together, not only to better align objectives but also to ensure that the technologies implemented truly address the challenges faced by the company.

Future Outlook

Experts have recommended taking a proactive approach to AI. It is essential to view AI as an opportunity to create added value, not merely as a risk factor.

The speakers also emphasized that the key to success lies in the ability to innovate in an agile manner and adapt to rapid market changes.

Conclusion

The 8th ASAGE Careers Conference 2024 not only shed light on the critical issues surrounding artificial intelligence but also demonstrated how AI can be a strategic asset for the future of businesses. Together, we have the opportunity to build resilient and innovative organizations that are ready to take on the challenges of the future.
