After our trip to Burgundy in 2017, we enjoyed a wonderful weekend in the Bordeaux region in the fall of 2018.
The organization was, as always, top-notch, with plenty of sunshine—a welcome treat this time of year. We climbed the Dune du Pilat, sailed on the Arcachon Bay, admired the architecture of Bordeaux and then that of Saint-Emilion, and finally capped off the trip in style with a warm, authentic welcome at Château Haut-Sarpe…
All of this was punctuated by gourmet breaks and took place in a friendly atmosphere centered around a core group of regulars, joined by newcomers. Let’s do it again in 2019!
“Take Versailles, add Antwerp, and you get Bordeaux.”
That is how Victor Hugo described Bordeaux when he first arrived in the city and caught sight of its elegance and its 18th-century buildings along the banks of the Garonne!
People think they know everything about Bordeaux, and yet Bordeaux is a city worth visiting—a city full of surprises.
Did you know, for example, that it lies on one of the routes to Santiago de Compostela, that it has several monuments designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, that it was once the largest port in the Kingdom of France, and that it is home to the largest preserved architectural complex from the 18th century?
Bordeaux is also—and always has been—known for its famous wines, whose names alone are enough to inspire dreams:
Médoc, Sauternes, Pomerol, Saint-Julien, and of course Saint-Émilion….
